Last week, I was called for jury duty. Having never been called for a jury, I didn't think I'd be picked...well, guess what? I got picked...FIRST! I've never been picked first for anything.
So, a group of thirty of us were brought to the courtroom for the final selection, questions from the Judge, and the attorneys involved. Again, I was chosen first as juror. Altogether, nine of us were chosen for a civil case. The only other case being tried was a criminal case down the hall.
We listened to testimony for four days, finally got the case at 4:30 on Thursday, and Friday we, after going over our notes, the evidence and deliberation, found for the plaintiff and awarded (after some arithmetic by one of our jurors) 7.62 Million dollars.
The verdict was accepted by the Court, however, the sum awarded, by law in Virginia, was capped at 1.25 Million.
All in all, an interesting experience.
